This is of particular benefit when filters are applied to the chip to correct the sensitivity to match the light source, or to discriminate between two different light sources. For example, a BG18 filter will correct photodiode response to that approximating the human eye. The sensitivity to white light will be reduced, depending on the thickness of the filter. Increasing the gain in the amplification circuit may compensate for this at the expense of other circuit performance criteria. Silonex products solve the problem by using a larger photodiode compared to the package size. IR filters are used to aid signal discrimination where high or variable lighting conditions exist.
